Scientific Name: Turdus philomelos

Appearance: Markedly smaller than blackbird. Plain brown to olive-brown upperparts. Underparts buff-white and boldly marked with dark, “V”-shaped spots. Orange-buff underwings are noticeable in flight. Sexes alike.

Song: Loud, vigorous and relentless. An extremely varied repertoire; some notes are melodious, some whistled, others harsh or rattled. A distinctive feature is the repetition of each note 2-4 times before moving to the next note.

When heard: Resident. One of the earliest seasonal singers in the UK, being heard as early as January and continuing through to the end of the breeding season in August or September.
